Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Pondicherry
The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is one of the most visited places in Pondicherry. This church was set up by the French missionaries in 1908 and later given the Basilica in 2011. Considered as a very good example of Neo-Gothic architecture, this is one among the 21 basilicas in India. The twin bell towers that dominate the main faรงade are 59 feet tall. Events from the life of Christ and saints of the Catholic Christians are described by rare stained glass panels. The statue of Madonna is placed at the right side of the high altar. Statues of the four evangelists were also erected, Beneath to it, there are four lamp posts describing their lives and inviting Jesus & the twelve apostles. It has the capacity to accommodate around 150 people at a time. The church premise also has a grotto dedicated to Our lady of Lourdes, a parish hall and an adoration chapel. A must visit place of the town, this church will seclude the visitors and take us to a world of tranquillity away from the fast-moving life of the city.
