Extending from the Arabian Sea and the fertile forest ridges of the Western Ghats, with their thriving coffee plantations, spices and fruits, boulder - strewn region of the Deccan Plateau, Karnataka's scenic diversity is striking. Karnataka, literally means an elevated land, the word is derived from karu (elevated) and nadu (land). Three rivers originate in the soaring Western Ghats - the Cauvery, the Tungabhadra and the Krishna. Over 65 percent of State populations speaks the language - Kannada, a Dravidian Language.



The 6th - 8th century Hindu Temples at Badami, Pattadakal and Aihole, the earliest to be found in South India, the great Vijayanagara Capital - Hampi and its monuments to Tipu Sultan's 18th century, the fort at Srirangapatna, and the famous Mysore Palace of 20th century will just amaze you. The profusion of historical monuments across the state evokes memories of the grandeur of a bygone era. No wonder then that Karnataka has been called the - Cradle of Stone Architecture.



There are destinations for adventure enthusiasts with an abundance of wildlife and national parks. The hill stations of the State like Coorg, Chikmagalur and others have a unique charm with coffee plantations, waterfalls and trekking surrounded by dense forests. The booming Capital Bengaluru, as one of South Asia's most cosmopolitan and progressive cities is a major IT Hub. Silk, Sandalwood, Spices and Coffee easily grown here. Its exquisite handicrafts, ethnic gold and silver jewellery and it's touching hospitality lend it a unique touch. Of the oldest forms of classical dance, the Mysore style of Bharatnatyam is widely performed here. Others include Kuchipudi and Kathak. Silk weaving, wood carvings, Metal Craft, Mysore Paintings, Embroidery and Lacquerware.



The main festival - Dussehara (Dasara) held in September/October every year is synonymous in the heritage city of Mysore. The city is drowned with colours and pageants reflecting the rich and diverse culture of its own. The festivities include performances in music, dance and drama, horticulture show, air show and adventure sports etc. The highlight of all celebrations is the glittering Mysore Palace in all its splendour. The colourful royal procession, Jumbo Safari is a remarkable one on the tenth day. Hampi Utsav also known as Vijay-Utsav, every year organized in the month of November by the State Government with the cultural extravaganza of dance, music and theatre.
