Subramanya Swamy (Marudhamalai Murugan) Temple
Subramanya Swamy, fondly Marudhamalai Murugan temple is a hill temple, dedicated to Lord Murugan, at a height of 600 feet, is about 12 km from Coimbatore city. The origin of the temple dates back to the 12th century. The Murugan deity is seen to be magnificently mounted on his vehicle peacock. Stone inscriptions around the temple informs us of the names Marudan, Marudhachalam etc for this temple. On the foothills, we are greeted by lord Vinayaka, which was considered self born. The โPambatti Siddharโ cave is another shrine that is located on the slopes, facing towards the east. Legend records that Pambatti Siddhar, a sage, used this cave as an abode for meditation on Lord Muruga and attained salvation here.
There are a couple of springs in the temple that have holy water, named Maruda Theertham and Skanda Theertham. It is believed that one can attain good health and wealth when dipping in these waters. There are 18 steps to come over for the shrine from the base. The arrangement is synonymous with Sabarimala temple and those who are not physically fit to reach Sabarimala coming across the forests, can fulfill the wishes here. Though we can reach atop the hill by road, people of adventure enthusiasm can take a foot way of more than 700 steps. The hill possesses a lot of plants of medicinal value which are used for ayurvedic medicine preparations. The lord here is so powerful that once you enter into this sacred place, you never come back with empty hands (you will be blessed with your wishes). The pure air and serene atmosphere simply energises a person both physically and mentally.
