Mettur Dam - Lagrest Dam in Tamilnadu

Considered to be one of the largest dams in south India, the construction of this dam was completed in the year 1934 across the river Cauvery. It is designed in a way to cater the needs of irrigation to the central districts of Tamil Nadu. The dam had a long history from the year 1834 to 1934. The construction work of the dam was started in 1925. The entire work was supervised by the then Governor of Madras, Sir George Stanley. The length of the dam is about 1700 metres and it holds the water capacity of 120 feet. It also has the contribution to produce 240 MW of hydro electricity. People who were the residencents of Nayambadi village, where the dam is constructed were asked to evacuate to another place.

When the water level of the dam recedes, we can see age-old Hindu temples and churches emerge from it as a proof. Those people who migrated from Nayambadi settled down in some nearby villages of Kollegal district of present Karnataka state. As a consequence of dams across the river in Karnataka, this dam is almost empty during summer seasons. The dam is surrounded by hills and plantations on all sides, which makes people spend time in the evening. There is a lovely park where kids can spend time. The view from the dam, down the Cauvery river (when water is at considerable level) is awesome.
