Kailasanathar Temple - Thingalur Chandran Temple (9 Planet)
The Kailasanathar temple is situated in the village of Thingalur, close to Thanjavur. Though the main deity here is Lord Shiva, this place is known for Chandran (moon), one of the navagrahas. As per the legend, Chandran had 27 wives, who are daughters of Daksha Prajapati. Among all his wives, Rohini was his favorite. Chandran used to spend most of his time with Rohini, ignoring other wives. The other daughters made a complaint to his father, resulting in a curse from Daksha that he would gradually fade away. Chandran did penance for lord Shiva here, to get relieved from the curse. To save Chandran from the curse, Shiva decorated him on his head as the crescent moon. As Daksha's curse too can not be ignored, Chandran will wane for the first 15 days, and develop back for the next 15 days, which are full moon and new moon days in the present science.
The temple is built in a Dravidian style of architecture and has a 5 tiered temple tower with two precincts. Records show that 10th century Chola rulers initiated this construction. The moon God is located in a separate shrine here. The other deities of the temple are lord Ganesha, lord Murugan, lord Dakshinamurthy, lord Chandikeswarar, Bhairavar and Goddess Gajalakshmi. The temple is revered by the hymns of Appar, a 7th century Saiva Tamil saint. Lord Chandran is well placed in birth chart means, they became a great person with good thinking ability. Chandra dosha causes concerns in mother's health, mental imbalance, skin and nervous disorder and jaundice. The people pray Chandran here to get out of these difficulties.
