Chikmagalur Tourism - Chikkamagaluru

There are millions of people, who still wish to wake up every morning with a cup of coffee. This district is one of the earliest, if not, the earliest known place to have coffee plantations to get introduced in India. One of the least visited, but (and so) one of the preserved hilly landscapes in South India, Chikkamagaluru, earlier Chikmagalur, is also a region of the Hoysalas remnants and shares similar history to that of the neighbouring Hassan district. The town is said to have been given as a dowry to the younger daughter of Rukmangada, the legendary chief of Sakrepatna. Hence the name literally means โ€˜the town of the younger daughterโ€™. The fact is, there is a place at the outskirts of Chikmagalur town called Hiremagalur which means โ€˜the town of the elder daughterโ€™.

Chikamagalur is the place where the rulers of the Hoysala empire started. It is mentioned that they had spent the early days of their dynasty. King Veera Ballala II, the great king of the Hoysala empire, built the Amrutheshwara temple in Amruthapura village in the 12th century. One of the most significant events in the history of Chikmagalur is that coffee was introduced for the first time in India here. The first coffee crop was grown in the BabaBudangiri Hills in 1670 A.D. It is believed that the saint Baba Budan on his pilgrimage to Mecca happened to discover coffee for the first here. The hills are named in honour of his discovery. With the Western Ghats forming most of the region, this is the place for adventure seekers and trekkers to explore their talents.
