Tiruchirappalli Nearby Tourist Places

From the pages of literature to the minds of historians, Tiruchchirappalli (Trichy) has a special mention. It lies at the geographical center of Tamil Nadu, on the banks of the holy river Cauvery. It is one of the areas of historical importance because it was reigned over by diverse kingdoms during different times that comprised the Pandyas, Cholas, Pallavas, Madurai and Delhi Sultanates, Vijayanagar Kingdom, Nayaks of Madurai and finally the British. Cholas had โ€˜Uraiyurโ€™ as their capital which is a suburb of Trichy. From a rock inscription of the 16th century, the region was called as Tiru-ssila-palli meaning โ€˜holy-rock-townโ€™ in Tamil, at present known as RockFort. During the British rule, Tiruchirappalli was commonly referred to using the erroneous spelling โ€˜Trichinopolyโ€™.

The earliest settlements date back to the second millennium BC. Later Woraiyur, with the present day Tiruchirappalli and their neighboring areas were annexed with the regions of Mahendra Varma Pallava I. Till 880 AD, this region was under the hegemony of either the Pallavas or the Pandyas. It was in A.D. 880, Aditya Chola brought a downfall to the Pallava dynasty. From that time onwards Tiruchirappalli continued its contribution as a major hub for the Chola empire. In 1225 AD, the area was occupied by the Hoysala emperors. Afterwards, it came under the rule of later Pandyas till the advent of Mughals. Mughals also led their supremacy in this region, which was put to an end by the Vijayanagar rulers. The Nayaks, the Governors of Vijayanagar empire, ruled this area till 1736 AD. Then the Muslims ruled this region again with the aid of the French or the English armies. Soon after the area was conceded by the East India Company as per the agreement at the eve of the Carnatic war. The agglomerated Tiruchirappalli district was formed under collector Mr. John Wallace (Junior) in 1801. The region was then under the hegemony of British for 150 years till the independence of India. Now, the city is in the top list for sightseeing and happy living.
