Kattabomman Memorial Fort - Panchalankurichi
Veerapandiya Kattabomman was the 18th century freedom fighter of Palayakar community and a chieftain of Panchalankurichi. He refused to accept the sovereignty of the British and was against their rule. In 1799, the British crushed the fortress in the war and Veerapandiya Kattabomman was caught as a slave. The fortification was later recovered from the British by his sibling. After Independence, the Archeological Survey of India kept up the stronghold. In 1974, the Tamil Nadu Government constructed another structure in the memory of the Panchalankurichi stronghold and Kattabomman. Within the memorial hall, there are beautiful paintings depicting the heroic deeds of the saga. It also houses a sanctum to โJakkammalโ, the genetic God of Kattabomman. It is a place for an hour visit especially for history lovers.
