The Convent and Church of St.Francis of Assisi is situated in Old Goa. This Church was found in the year 1517 during the Portuguese rule. The chapel was transformed into a Church in 1661.
The structure is built of laterite blocks and is lime-plastered. Adjacent to the church, there is an archaeological museum that houses the pre-historic items from the tribal past and also the reminders of the Goa.
The Church has been designed by the Tuscan order and in baroque with Corinthian features. Interior of this church was beautifully carved with gilded main altar depicts the crucified Jesus, St.Francis and Our Lady with her baby Jesus.
On the both sides of the main altars, paintings are displayed on wood explaining the life of St.Francis of Assisi. There is an archaeological museum close to the Church with good collections of the colonial past.
Visiting hours: 08:30 am to 06:30 pm (sometimes closes at 05:30 pm as per the season)
Visiting hours for the Museum: from 09:00 am to 05:00 pm except Fridays.
