Athirappilly Waterfalls - Plummeting down from 80 feet
The majestic Sholayar forest ranges give way to the charismatic Athirapally & Vazhachal Waterfalls. They both join the Chalakudy river plummeting down from 80 feet. These waterfalls are the favourite destination for many and it continues to attract many tourists year round. The journey from the plain surface to the falls passes through a landscape of winding roads, small villages and lush green trees. Visitors can reach the top of the waterfall through a paved path that leads through thick bamboo clusters. There is a steep pathway leading to the bottom of the falls. The trek down from the top of the waterfalls is about 15 minutes for a healthy person. Swimming is possible in the stream as one can enjoy, with rainbows as a common sight.
The dense vegetation around the falls comes under the forest division is one of the best biodiversity hotspots in Kerala. Interestingly, Athirappilly - Vazhachal region is a home to four kinds of Great Indian Hornbills. The forest reserve is also a habitat of elephants, bisons, tigers, leopards and many other animals. The river is blessed with 85 species of freshwater fish living in it. Athirapally waterfalls never dry out so that it can be visited anytime during the year. Normally, monsoons are considered advisable time for the falls. But for this one, it shows its full glory during monsoons, which makes it dangerous for the visitors. September to January remains the advisable time to visit. This falls remains the top location for the film shooting in India.
