Bekal Fort in Kerala - Pride of Kasaragod

The pride of Kasaragod is the Bekal fort, which is built over a headland that runs into the sea. Archaeologically speaking, it is a 300 year old keyhole shaped structure built with defensive strategy in mind. Bekal fort was primarily a military stronghold in the Malabar area, strategically built to combat invaders from the sea. There is some contention that it had been built during the reign of the Chirakkal Rajas. Another popular theory is that it was among a series of forts built by Shivappa Nair of Bednoor. The logic behind the assumption being the creation of similar forts at other places including Chandragiri. The 'Ramakshatriyaโ€™ community found in Bekal, Panayal and other places in Kasaragod are said to be direct descendants of a community brought to the area to fortify these military garrisons. The fort spreads over 40 acres of land with massive walls about 12 meters in height built of local laterite stones.

The headland on which it is situated runs into the sea with a fine bay towards the south. The site was so well selected to give a complete view of the area and also the laterite bedrock was very well utilized to strengthen the construction. It is a large fort, the wall and ramparts on the seaside being strong and interspersed by the bastions with openings for guns. The tank with its flight of steps, the opening of the tunnel towards the south, the magazine for keeping ammunition are some of the important features to note. There is a wide ramp leading to the observation tower giving a fascinating view of the surrounding area. It gives an aerial view of the surroundings and also has the strategic significance for the safety of the fort. It is the largest fort in Kerala, well preserved and managed by the Archeological Survey of India. The natural scenery at Bekal is alluring and makes a visit to the place an exhilarating experience. An old mosque is also situated very near the fort believed to be built by Tipu Sultan.
