Daria Daulat Bagh, Srirangapatna also called Tipu’s Summer Palace

Daria Daulat Bagh, which literally translates to ‘wealth of the sea’, is famously known as Tipu’s Summer Palace. The construction of this palace by the famous ruler of Mysore, Hyder Ali in 1778 and completed by his son Tipu Sultan in 1784. Tipu Sultan considered this construction as ‘Abode of Happiness’ and ‘Envy of Heaven’. It is a rectangular palace built in Indo Saracenic style of architecture on a raised platform, made of teakwood with open corridors and wooden pillars. The front side of the palace has arches and brackets that are colourfully painted.


The sides of the palace have a line of bay with pillars. The interiors have been painted with floral motifs. The outer walls have paintings on various events. The wooden ceiling of the palace is also beautifully decorated with floral motifs. There is a small museum that has a collection of mementos along with many European paintings and Persian manuscripts. Clothes of Tipu Sultan, his crown, Silver vessel of Hyder Ali, war weapons, coins etc, have been showcased here. The place is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India.
