Doddagaddavalli Lakshmi Devi Temple

This lesser known magnificent Hoysala marvel dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, is located in a small village of Doddagaddavalli, midway between Hassan town and the famous Belur temple. The Lakshmi Devi Temple was built during the reign of the famous Hoysala ruler Vishnuvardhana (1106-1142 AD). It is the only Hoysala temple having four shrines situated at cardinal directions built inside a 7 feet tall stone wall enclosure. Three of the shrines share a common square hall with nine bays (compartments). The fourth one is connected to the hall through an oblong extension consisting of two bays.

The temple has withstood the vagaries of time very well and stands in pristine condition. A lake and the greenery of the surroundings will catch the sight of the travellers. One can get the entire view of the temple from the lake. There are a series of granite steps that lead into the temple complex. A 3 foot tall image of Goddess Lakshmi with 4 hands and an attendant on either side is the main shrine. The shrine is open for worship in designated times. The temple has a lot of intricate carvings on the walls carrying the Gods from Hindy mythological stories. It is a must visit and can be taken as a preface to Belur Chennakesava temple.
