Gumbaz in Srirangapatna - Tombs of Tipu Sultan and Hyder Ali

Also known as Tipu Sultan’s Mausoleum, this chamber is located close to Tipu’s Summer Palace in the Daria Daulat Bagh. Along with his father, Tipu was also allowed to be buried here, following his death in the Fourth Anglo-Mysore war with British in 1799. It is built in Persian style of architecture on a stone plinth with polished black granite pillars that run along the corridor around the inner chamber. To commemorate the bravery of Tipu, the chamber is painted with tiger stripes. The doors and the lattice windows on the four sides of the Gumbaz looks as if they are intricately carved in wood. There are also some other cenotaphs related to Tipu Sultan’s family. Adjacent to the chamber is a beautiful mosque Masjid-E-Aqsa, built by Tipu. the entire architecture is surrounded by a rectangular garden.
