Gurudwara Nanak Jhira Sahib - Guru Nanak Dev

Gurudwara Nanak Jhira Sahib, this Sikh shrine was built in 1948 dedicated to the first Sikh leader ‘Guru Nanak Dev’. It is established in a beautiful valley, surrounded by laterite hills on three sides. Guru Nanak, in his second missionary tour, visited South India through Maharashtra. On his visit to Hyderabad, he met Muslim saints Yakoob Ali and Pir Jalaluddin. He was put up at the outskirts of Bidar along with his companion Mardana. When people came to know about his visit, they started gathering here and informed him about the scarcity of drinking water for them. They also revealed that the water available in Bidar was salty and unfit for drinking.

It is believed that after hearing the plight of the residents, he was hardly moved by the miserable condition of the people. With his divinity, to the utter surprise of the people, a spring of clean water which was sweet and cool started gushing out of the hillside. That place soon came to be known as 'Nanak-Jhira' (Nanak’s water). The water source is still preserved here serving the people of Bidar. The gurdwara complex comprises Darbar Sahib, Diwan Hall and Langar Hall. Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book of Sikh, is also available here. Opposite to the front stairs of the gurdwara, there is a holy water tank.

The water of the fountain is collected in a small 'Amrit Kund' built in white marble which the management built with the contributions made by the devotees. Devotees now take holy dips of body and soul in the sacred water tank with a strong belief that the water channeled into this sarovar is sure to cure several ailments and wash of sins. A Sikh museum is also present here that houses important historical events in the history of Sikhism as paintings and pictures. There is a free kitchen (Guru ka Langar, they call) in the gurdwara, where free food is given to pilgrims at all times.
