Jew Town at Mattancherry in Fort Kochi

Once an enclave for Jews, the Jews street is now feeble in their population of that community who left for Israel. The star of David inscribed variegated arches wear a work out look. The marvellous blue and green facades stand faded. The spice shops and curio souks so interestingly developed by Jews are still thriving in the market road. Jew Town is one of the oldest settlements in the country dating back to the 16th century, when the rulers of Cochin allotted a piece of land for the Jews for their livelihood along with trade. Now, it is the place to discover some of the most unique antiques in the country. One can come across some shops that can give the opportunity to explore a variety of home-decor items. Some new products fashioned the traditional way are available.

Beautifully carved spice boxes, copper wares, brass wares, wooden utensils are some of the things to mention. Those products that will tempt us to purchase have to be careful for their authenticity and bargaining tactics. An interesting thing to take a look here is that the world's largest Uruli (a traditional cooking vessel). Made from bell metal, it is 12 feet in diameter and weighs around 3200 kg. It holds the Limca Book of Records as the largest such vessel in the world. There are a lot of shops to enjoy a refreshing beverage and some hot snacks. The scintillating work of various arts in those shops will be a sight to behold. In the heart of Jew town stands the Kochi International Pepper Exchange, which has switched to online trading now.
