Kerala Kalamandalam - Cheruthuruthy
Founded in 1930 by renowned Malayalam poet Padmabhooshan โVallathol Narayana Menonโ, Kerala Kalamandalam is a dignified name in the field of Kerala arts. It is located on the banks of the river Bharathapuzha in the Cheruthuruthy village. It is strictly a residential center of learning. It was the time when Kathakali, the traditional dance form of Kerala, was steadily losing its popularity in the early 19th century. The great poet was quick to realize the need of keeping the dance alive. In his efforts, he got the help of some royal Kathakali enthusiasts like Kunjikuttan Thampuran and M. Mukundaraja.
These people took great pains to arrange the performances by renowned artists throughout the state and even successfully raised finances through lotteries. It made evolution not only for Kathakali but also for other folk arts like Kootiyattam, Mohiniyattam, Panchavadyam, Thullal and others. Artists here give recitals and dance performances all over the country and the world. The place is chosen similar to ancient โGurukulamsโ with a pure, simple and cultural atmosphere where the traditional art forms have survived for long. It has a conventional dance theatre namely โKoothambalamโ, which is the only dance theatre in the state constructed outside a temple area. Koothambalam is built in accordance with โVikrushtra Madhyaโ as specified in the article on art by sage Bharata.
Visitors are welcome on all working days. Bear in mind that Kalamandalam being an educational institution has many non-working days. Public holidays, exam seasons, summer vacation, Onam and Christmas holidays are periods of complete or partial shut off. Only 30 people per day are allowed. They are split into three batches. It is better to book your spot on the tour before visiting the place. Though there is no restriction on taking photographs, tourists should keep in mind that it is a learning centre. They are not advised to indulge in the activities which make them feel disrespectful towards the arts. Guides will accompany the tourists to explain the activities of the institute.
