Malampuzha Dam, Palakkad - Wonderful Picnic Spot
Malampuzha is a wonderful picnic spot perfect for every kind of tourist. Malampuzha dam is the largest reservoir in Kerala. It is built on the Malampuzha river at a height of 355 feet. Malampuzha is a tributary of Keralaโs second longest river Bharathapuzha. The dam is conceived as a multi-purpose project to provide water for irrigation, drinking, industries, electricity, fish farming etc. The project began in 1949 and completed in 1955. It was only after India's independence in March 1949, that the then Public Works Minister, M. Bhaktavatsalam laid the foundation stone for the project as Palakkad was a part of the Madras presidency. In October 1955, the then Chief Minister of Madras K. Kamaraj inaugurated the dam. The total catchment area is 145 square kilometres, while the reservoir has a capacity of 8000 square meters of water. There is a wonderful garden with 100 species of roses to savour, a snake park with a large variety of reptiles to send a chilly sensation. There is a ropeway ride at a height of 60 feet that can cover the entire garden. It has a fancy park with as many as 20 ride options and a KTDC Garden House offering boating facility and water scooters for a trip round the reservoir. The region remains green most of the time and looks pretty more attractive on monsoons.
