The idyllic hill station Munnar, famous for its tea estates, exotic lush greenery and craggy peaks, is located in the Western Ghats of Idukki district. Munnar was the favored summer resort of the erstwhile British rulers in the colonial days. Dews on tea leaves resulting from the hanging misty cover over the tea garden make the appearance of this aspect of human indulgence even more beautiful. This is the first image of Munnar when its name is uttered which is later piled with the other reasons of its fame which is why it is so much loved by the routine travelers along with those who have heard it enough times to have strong desire to see it at least once. The valley is also famous for the Neelakurinji flowers that bloom once in 12 years. During this time, the valleys and hills get blanketed by the purple blue blooms. The history of Munnar is quite interesting and takes us into the colonial era when the British used to rule this place. Scottish planters were the first ones to have discovered Munnar and the Duke of Wellington was the first notable personality to visit Munnar. The British developed this land for the purpose of tea plantations and as getaways from the heat of summers. There are several prehistoric relics that point towards the existence of Stone Age civilization in this region. Evidences point to the fact that written history began here only from the 10th century.
