Parambikulam Tiger Reserve - Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary
Parambikulam Tiger Reserve, formerly Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary, this reserve is the most protected ecological piece of Anamalai sub unit of the Western Ghats. Covering the area of 285 sq km, the entire region is restricted for any kind of human activities. The sanctuary has excellently conserved flora and fauna due to minimal human interference. It is the home ground for different races of indigenous people. The opulent habitat of the sanctuary with ample water supplies make it an abode for wildlife and thereby for tourists who can have treasured memories of animal sightings and that of being in the lap of mother nature of one of the worldโs 34 biodiversity hotspots. And so, the region is considered as the most attractive piece of wilderness in the entire Western Ghats. Statistics say that the national park shelters 39 species of mammals, 16 species of amphibians, 268 species of birds, 61 species of reptiles, 47 species of fishes, 1049 species of insects, 124 species of butterflies and around 30 tigers. Jungle safaris are arranged by the Kerala Forest Department morning and afternoon, which can be booked online or through travel agents. Since the place is devoid of commercial activities, the possible way for the overnight stay will be at the forest guest houses. Though geographically located in Kerala, the reserve has road access only through Tamil Nadu.
