Shivanasamudra Waterfalls - literally translates to ‘Shiva’s sea’

At a distance of around 90 km from Mysore in Mandya district, this majestic waterfall forms from river Kaveri. Shivanasamudra, literally translates to ‘Shiva’s sea’, is the second largest waterfall in India. The falls is almost 890 meters wide and 320 feet high. Here, the river Kaveri splits in two separate places namely Gaganachukki and Bharachukki and they reunite at the downstream with great velocity as Shivanasamudra falls. Gaganachukki falls is maintained comparatively better than the other with better tourist facilities. The sight of the fall is exceptional especially during early hours of the day. One can have a better look of the falls from the watchtower as it is the only available option. Bharachukki falls is slightly wider than the Gaganachukki falls.

Here, tourists can go till the bottom through a trail of stairs carved out through the rocks. The water level is shallow at the bottom which is perfect for bathing. Coracle rides are also available that take tourists till the mouth of the waterfall. Tourists are required to walk for some 2 km, passing through refreshing greenery of the forest. There are benches available at the fall where you can enjoy the serene view. June to September is the monsoon and best time to visit the falls. October to March is the winter time, which is also a good option. The waterfalls look extremely beautiful but may be marred by the mist that surrounds the whole place. Summers are relatively hotter than the other days. Though the falls seem to be withered, the green environment will help the tourists to beat the heat. The captivating beauty and sheer vastness that creates a view is worth remembering.
