Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens - Also called Mysore Zoo

Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, popularly known as Mysore Zoo, it was established in the year 1892. Mr. G.H. Krumbiegel, a German Landscaper and a horticulturist was the responsible for this natural habitat for exclusive wildlife creatures. Spread in an area of 78 hectares, the zoo houses 1450 specimens comprising 168 species representing more than 25 countries. It attracts more than 3 million visitors annually. The highlight of the zoo is the maintenance of its greenery throughout the year. Continuous planting of saplings, ensuring cleanliness, avoiding littering of plastic materials, educating visitors about the responsibility towards other creatures are some of the reasons behind its charm. 'Zoo Education programmes' throughout the year are regularly organized involving students / NGO's / Resource Persons / Volunteers etc.


Some of the creatures one can witness here are Cheetah, Jaguar, Tiger, Lion, Leopard Cat, Jungle Cat, Common Palm Civet, Baboon, Capuchin Monkey, Lemur, Chimpanzee, Indian Langur, Asian & African Elephants, Rhinoceros, Gaur, Hippopotamus, Emu, Rhea, Ostrich, Cassowary, Terrestrial Birds, Aquatic Birds, Deers, Antelopes, Ducks, Reptiles and so on. To cover this much area in a fastest way possible, the zoo has the facility of battery operated vehicles. One can take a ride on these vehicles and get a glimpse in a quickest way. The zoo was named to honour Chamarajendra Wodeyar Bahadur, the then ruler of Mysore, who permitted and allotted the first piece of land for this biodiversity. This zoological garden stands second next to Mysore palace for the most visited places in Mysore.

Mysore Zoo is open from 08:30 AM to 05:30 PM on all days except Tuesdays.
