St. Aloysius Chapel, Mangalore - Chapel of St. Aloysius College
St. Aloysius Chapel is located inside St. Aloysius College Ground situated at the heart of Mangalore. The college was built in 1880 by Jesuit Missionaries. The chapel inside it was built in 1885 to honour a wealthy and successful person, St. Aloysius Gonzaga, who gave up his worldly pleasures at a young age to serve the destitute. The construction was headed by Reverend Father Joseph Willy. This chapel is considered equivalent with those in Rome of Italy, because of its amazing architecture, extraordinary layouts and a well thought execution. Apart from its architecture and geography, the chapel is revered for its beautiful paintings by a passionate Italian Jesuit painter โAntonio Moscheniโ. The panel paintings are entirely dedicated entirely to Aloysius.
It has the story of a child, dedicating his life at the Altar of Mary in Florence, his preaching to his people about God, Seeking admission to the Jesuit order, his first communion etc. Paintings in the ceilings show him serving the plague-stricken community in Rome, a disease he too contacted and led to his death at the age of 23. The Apostle of India St. Thomas, the Patron of Environmentalists St. Francis of Assisi, the Apostles of the Afro-American race St. Peter Claver, a scholar John De Britto who studied South, and other Indian customs etc. paintings on the rear walls is about the story of Jesus Christ from his birth till his crucification. The view of the Arabian Sea from the campus is worth the trip along with this Chapel.
