Thangassery Lighthouse or Tangasseri Lighthouse
If you are fascinated by all marine things, or up for an adventure any time of the day, or just enjoy a fantastic view, a visit to Thangassery should find a place on your list. Thangassery (Tangasseri), which means 'gold village' was once a British enclave, known as 'Dutch Quilon'. This place was the hub of a flourishing trade that used gold currency and was of great importance for the people here. Thangassery has the ruins of an old Portuguese fort and churches, built during the 18th century. It is famous for its lighthouse built in 1902 at 144 feet high.
The backdrop of tall swaying coconut trees makes for a relaxing sitout to the quiet beach. Visitors are allowed to climb to the top of the lighthouse tower. The spiraling staircase to the top of the tower is around 200 steps. But once you reach atop, it will bring the spectacular panoramic view of the Arabian Sea and splendor of the backwaters and Kollam town. A lift has also been installed to help those who wish to avoid going through steps. The lighthouse along with the beach is an apt choice for all kinds of tourists from couples / families and for the singles to spend quality time with nature.
