Triprayar Sri Rama Temple - Prominent Hindu Temple

There are no written scriptures which could establish the exact date of the construction of this Thriprayar Temple or any other incidence. The legend is that during the incarnation of lord Vishnu as Krishna, he had the idols of lord Rama, Bharatha, Lakshmana and Shatrughna in his town Dwarka. After his duty on his incarnation was over, the city of Dwarka was engulfed by the sea and these idols got submerged. One day while fishing in the sea at Thrissur, the idols were caught in the net of the fishermen. They had seen a flash of light emanating from the idols and were astonished.

The chief of the fishermen and some others had gone to the nearby ancestors of the 'Vakkayil Kaimal' and informed them of the incident. Kaimal and the people of the locality arrived at the site of the idols. On discussing with the priests and other superiors of the region, they decided that the idol of Rama was to be installed at Triprayar, Bharatha at Irinjalakuda, Lakshmana at Moozhikulam and Shatrughna at an adjacent place called Payammel. That is how the temple was constructed here. This temple is famous for its elaborate wood carvings. The major attraction is the intricate elaborate wood carvings.

The masterpiece of this craftsmanship is the Namaskara Mandapam, which is ornamented with 24 intricately carved wooden panels. Apart from it, a number of mural paintings from the epic Ramayana are also protected in the temple. On the outer courtyard of the temple, there is a shrine dedicated to lord Ayyappa. It is believed that this particular shrine was located at a site, which corresponds to the temple's sanctum. River Theevra touches down the temple is an added beauty.
