Valiyaparamba Backwaters - Kavvayi Backwaters

Located on the border of Kannur and Kasaragod districts, Valiyaparamba backwaters (Kavvayi Backwaters) is the only one of the backwater kind in North Kerala. Valiyaparamba is slowly becoming popular among the tourists mainly because of its rustic charm and peaceful environment. A boat cruise in traditional 'kettuvallam' (houseboat) offers a panoramic view of the coconut groves in this island. With fishing as the only occupation of the people here, tourists can come across a lot of fishing techniques on the cruise. The cool breeze, coconut lagoons, variety of seabirds, activities like husking, etc provide a larger canvas for the travellers.

Agriculture stands next to fishing in which the islands are known for mussel cultivation. The backwater is fed by 4 rivers and many small islands. If you want to embrace the beauty around the backwaters at a leisurely pace, you can also get houseboats at nominal fares. Also the small islands on the Valiyaparamba backwaters are a home for many migratory birds. One can take binoculars and cameras along with you on your cruise to catch some fascinating glimpse of these birds. Though not like Alleppey, the backwaters offer very few options for the houseboat operators but it is not tough to find the best though. Day excursions from Kannur or Bekal / Kasargod are highly encouraged to enjoy a backwater cruise, though overnight stay is available.
