Vellore Sightseeing Places to Visit
Vellore town has a mix of heritage and culture reflecting the dravidian civilization. It was the power of the Pallavas, Cholas, Nayak, Marathas, Arcot Nawabs and Bijapur Sultan Kingdoms. Vellore was once the capital city of the Vijayanagar empire during the 17th century. The fort in Vellore was considered the strongest fortress during the Carnatic war. The monuments found in the region give a clear show of the evolution of the city through the ages. Before India's independence, there were many changes in kingdoms throughout the country and their capitals. The northern and southern regions of Arcot came into the political map around the 19th century. Later in 1908, it was divided into two districts namely North and South Arcot for commercial purposes.
Chittoor (presently in Andhra Pradesh state) was the first capital of the North Arcot district and went on as the principal military base of the British. In 1911, Vellore became the headquarters of North Arcot district., comprising Vellore and Tiruvannamalai. Vellore district always remained in the forefront of Indian struggle for independence. In fact, the Sepoy Mutiny of 1806 A.D. which is also known as the Vellore Mutiny erupted out inside the Vellore fort against the British authority is considered to be a prelude to the Great Revolt of 1857. The spectacular performance of this district in contributing to the military service is commendable, as a large number of men enlisted themselves to the military service, to serve the nation with indomitable spirit and courage.
