Classic example of Hoysala Art...

This city is the capital city of Hoysala Dynasty before it was moved to Halebid. The Chennakesava temple dedicated to Lord Krishna was built in 1117A.D. by vishnuvardhana to commemorate the victory of Hoysalas over the Chola Kingdom. This temple was declared as the one of the crowns of hoysala architecture. A main tower was erected by the Vijayanagara kings in the 16th century. The exterior of the temple is surrounded with thousands of mini sculptures showing the friezes of elephants, lotus stems, garlands and lovely couples. Bracket figures such as female dances, musicians, huntresses standing under the trees are beautifully carved in the soap stones.This temple is still active in worship.
