Cultural Capital of Kerala ...

This city is situated on the coast of the Arabian Sea and well known for its Pooram festivals. This city is also called as the cultural capital of Kerala. The name was derived from "Tiru-Shiva-Perur" or the town with the name of Lord Shiva is appropriate. The most famous Pooram festival is celebrated at the Vadakkumnathan Temple every year during April-May and is one of the biggest in the South. This Pooram festival brings together all the temples in the city with colourful processions, traditional music and dances. Another attraction is Pulikali or tiger dance during the Onam festival celebrations. Here, the temple dedicated for Lord Shiva is a classical example of Kerala style of architecture and houses several sacred shrines.
