Puducherry (Pondicherry) Tourism - Paris of the East
One of the seven union territories in India, Puducherry (Pondicherry) is a small coastal town, located geographically in Tamil Nadu state. According to the legend, Pondicherry was earlier known by the name โVedapuriโ and this place is also believed to be the abode of the revered sage โAgastyaโ. Pondicherry had trade relations with Rome during the 1st century AD. Roman pottery excavated from one Arikamedu village here dates back to that time. The French settlement in India began in 1673 with the purchase of land at Chandannagar from the Mughal Governor of Bengal along with Pondicherry. Both became the centres of maritime commercial activities for the French in India.
In 1674, Francois Martin, the first Governor of the region, started developments by transforming it from a small fishing village into a flourishing port town. Later came the Dutch and had the treaty with French Government to hand over Pondicherry to the latter in 1699. Like the British, the French decided to extend their area of influence taking advantage of quarrels among the Indian rulers. Joseph Francois Dupleix was appointed as the Intendant of Chandernagore in 1731, sowing the seeds of colonisation. Pondicherry got fortified by him. In 1741 Dupleix was transferred as the Governor of Pondicherry holding sway over the French areas in India. During his leadership, Dupleix extended his reign from Hyderabad to Cape Comorin through Carnatic wars.
But all these efforts went in vain because the British and France while fighting in Europe, changed their administered areas among themselves through various treaties. It was in 1816, following the Napoleonic wars, some of the portions in India were allowed to be handled by the British to France. In 1947, the English left India for good but it was not until 1954, that the French handed this region over to an independent India. The French ruled Pondicherry for almost 300 years. In 1963, Pondicherry officially became an integral part of India after the French Parliament in Paris ratified the treaty with India. Thus, Puducherry became a Union Territory. It has some portions under its administration in Kerala (Mahe) & Andhra Pradesh (Yanam) states.
