This city is also known as "Trichy", the oldest city in Tamil Nadu and the fourth largest city in the State. This rock city is situated on the banks of the River Cauvery "The Ganges of the South". The city is very famous for its artificial gems and tobacco leaves. It lies at the geographical center of Tamil Nadu. This great travel destination is a fine blend of temples and monuments, industrial and manufacturing companies. From this city one can access the two large water reservoirs namely Mukkombu and Kallanai, the ancient dam built by the early cholas which has the maximum storage capacity. This city is the centre for the transport services. There is a Railway Locomotive Manufacturing centre in Ponmalai which has its significant past. The big companies like BHEL (Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited), HAPP (Heavy Alloy Penetrator Project) and OFT (Ordnance Factory Tiruchirappalli) are some of the important highlights of the city. Now, the city is in the top list for site seeings and happy living.

Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple

This city is the most important sacred pilgrimage center for Hindus. The temple is also termed as "Paradise on the earth". This temple ranks the first among the 108 holy shrines for Lord Vishnu. Here Vishnu is named as "Ranganatha" and the temple was originated in 12th century by the Chola dynasty and later expanded by other dynasties in the following centuries. The temple area is very massive consists of 21 towers and 7 entrances. There is a view point inside the temple to get a full panoramic view of all the towers with a golden roof at its center is incredible. The largest Gopuram, the main entrance, was completed in 1987, and now measures 73m. The white tower in the eastern side and the horse pillared hall are some of the highlights of the Dravidian architecture. In the month of December and January, the temple celebrates its annual festival for about for 20 days for Vishnu in the Thousand Pillared Hall. The temple is crowded with millions of devotees in the festive season. The Chariot festival will be held in the month of January and April every year.

Rockfort Uchchipillayar Temple

There are two main temples: Sri Thayumanaswamy Temple, halfway to the top and Vinayaka Temple, at the summit, which is dedicated to Lord Ganesha. The height of the rock is 83m and this rock was surrounded by the commercial streets, colleges, hospitals etc. According to the geological research, the age of the rock is 2500 billion years old. In the 19th century there exists a carnatic war between British and French over the Supremacy of India. The British Emperor used this rock as a fort for the military. It is one of the wonders of trichy. The spectacular Rock Fort temple is perched 83m high on a massive rocky outcrop. The rock is situated at the heart of the city. It dominates the City's landscape. One can have a panoramic view of the city and the river Cauvery from the summit. In the 2nd century this rock is served as a meditation place for the community of Jains. On the way to the hillock, there exists a rock cut cave temple built by the Pallavas in the 7th century was dedicated to Lord Shiva.


Thiruvanaikovil Sri Jambukeswara Temple

The Element of Nature - " Water"


This temple here is dedicated for Lord Shiva and the lingam in the Sanctum Sanctorum signifies one of the five elements of Nature, "Water". The temple belongs to the Pandyas built in 13th century and consists of five entrances. The towers are beautifully painted and the pillars are wonderfully carved. This is also one of the best example for the Dravidian Architecture. The unusual lingam under a Jambu tree always remains under water. The beautiful temple of Jambukeswaram is situated in Srirangam, an island in the river Kaveri (also Cauvery), near the city of Tiruchirappalli. Placed nearby are some of the major pilgrim centers of South India-namely, Thanjavur, Madurai and Srirangam. The temple boasts of a rich heritage with intricate carvings on the faรงade as well as the interior.
